Thursday, April 14, 2005 View all Press Releases PRESS STATEMENT ON OBASANJO'S FOREIGN TOURS AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS ON GOVERNANCE He has gone again for 14 days leaving the administration of Nigeria without a supervisory head. With this latest globetrotting spree of Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, he has in the last 6 (Six) years been absent from the governance of Nigeria for 512 days, which is more than a year and a half in the last 6 (Six) years as President of Nigeria. When a House Keeper abandons the House he is keeping he cannot prevent all sorts of anti social activities from taking advantage of his absence. The corruption that has ravaged the country, which is clearly unprecedented, is due partly to the absence of Mr. President from the supervisory seat of governance in Aso Rock Even when Mr. President is in the country, he hops from one state to another paying social visits. He returns to the country from his tours at times to start such internal State visits and when such internal State visits end he jets out of the country. In all, our President has slept out of Nigeria 512 days in the last 6 (Six) years. The foremost House Keeper of the affairs of Nigeria is many times absent from the House. Gen. Obasanjo is complaining of corruption but most of the instances of corruption in his government are caused by his absence from his supervisory role of leadership. When the cat is in the house, the rats shiver and exit themselves from the house, but when the cat is out of the house most times the rats feed fat and multiply The same goes for Obasanjo administration. This also explain the pervasiveness of the corruption in his administration Nigerians must appeal to Mr. President to stay at home and govern and stop bemoaning the corruption his absence has helped to promote  CHIEF GANI FAWEHINMI LL.D, SAN |
