PRESS STATEMENT: APPRECIATION AND GRATITUDE
I arrived on Saturday, 10th May, 2008 from London where I have been receiving medical treatment for lung cancer. I have been given a medically advised break in my treatment. Hence, my stay in the country is going to be temporary and short before I go back.
I want to thank Nigerians of all walks and cadres of life from the poor to the rich, from the underdog to the privileged, from Moslems and Christians to pagans, for:
(a) their unique celebration of my 70th birthday in my absence; and
(b) their prayers for recovery from this terminal disease.
I specially appreciate the wonderful role played by the press – both print and electronic media – for their support through the publication of various tributes, messages, editorials, articles, lectures, etc, etc.
With the remaining time left for me in the world, I will treasure these unusual, wonderful and unprecedented outpouring of love, support and kindness from my fellow country men and women. I will continue to battle this deadly disease of lung cancer despite the pain and pangs it entails, with determination and courage that I can muster. I believe that with the prayers and support of Nigerians and of course God’s intervention the best will be achieved.
I thank everybody and may God Almighty bless everyone.
