In his acceptance speech on the award of Senior Advocate of Nigeria titled

THE WAY THE LAW SHOULD GO, Gani said:

"The Rule of Law is the bastion of democratic stability in any nation. Lawyers must ensure that the Law not only rules but that it is also seen to rule. And the law can only rule if everybody is brought under the law and nobody is made to be above the law. The same law must apply to the rich and to the poor alike, the highly placed and the lowly placed, the powerful and the weak."

It is well known that, for the ensurance of his belief, Gani had put his life on the line in numerous instances. His courage in defending his beliefs has no limit.

Attesting to Gani's courage, Dr. Walter Carrington, as the Ambassador of the United State of America to Nigeria once said:

"Gani is the kind of man I had always wanted to be from - childhood - somebody who would not be afraid to put his life on the line. That great courage inspired me."

Gani did not set out to become a hero. What Gani set out to do and is still doing tirelessly is to brilliantly, energetically, courageously and sacrificially fight for the rights of the poor, weak and down-trodden in the society, through the instrumentality of the lay and the court of justice.

In his own words, Gani said:

"It is by sheer accident that there is a Gani Fawehinmi who had to go from one prison to another and from one trial to another. It is not my own making. It is not my power. It is divine intervention that has saved our lives."

The concept "Fawehinmiism" was institutionalized by the Nigerian Bar Association (Ikeja Branch) on 15th January 2005. it is significant that Gani was called to the Nigerian Bar on 15th January, 1965.

Every year on 15th of January respectable and distinguished will give talks, raise debates, ask and answer questions on the philosophy FAWEHINMISM on the platform of the Annual Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN). The spirit behind the annual event are:
  1. To arouse the fires of patriotism in the minds of the youths of Nigeria and challenge them from unproductiveness and dormancy into modern activism for the achievement of greater Nigeria,
  2. The expousal of the virtues of courage, integrity, doggedness as epitomized by the Lawyers' Layer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi
  3. Creation of awareness in the public of the benefit of achieving social changes along legal channels, even in the face of seeming impossibilities and heart rending difficulties
  4. Creation of a credible and effective platform for the assessment, evaluation of government policies in the polity and provision of constructive criticisms and suggestion to government and authorities
  5. To advance the cause of human rights not only in Nigeria but globally.
