FAWEHINMIISM
The concept Fawehinmism is a celebration of the life, ideas, ideals, style, doggedness and unquantifiable contributions of Gani Fawehinmi to the development of law in Nigeria and the welfare of the teeming poor masses of Nigeria.
Gani is multidimentional in perspective. Depending on the side of Gani that you intend to explore or had seen, Gani can go with different antonomasia. Gani may be seen as an historian, a writer, an activist, a sociologist, a philosopher or a literary artist. Of course Gani is a lawyer.
There are records all over the places that Gani is not only an advocate of immense repute with clear analytical mind on legal issues but also a scholar whose penchant for record keeping is unsurpassed. He is a prolific writer who integrates the skill of an historian by keeping past records, an activist that turns ideology into actions, a sociologist that mirrors societal institutions, a philosopher that probes the depth of knowledge, and a literary artist that pens beautiful literature full of facts and figures.
Gani has also been described as a ambassador. In the words of Mr. Van Eackhout Drek, the Belgium Ambassador to Nigeria.
"When I was coming to Nigeria, some notable persons told me that one man I should meet is Gani Fawehinmi. On my way here (to Gani Fawehinmi Chambers) today, I asked my Nigeria driver whether he knows anything about Gani Fawehinmi. My driver said yes. That the man is the representative of the entire poor people in Nigeria. Then my mind became more relaxed because I feel that I am going to meet a fellow ambassador. You (Gani) are the Ambassador of the poor in Nigeria."
The man Gani Fawehinmi, is an enigma and the only way to study and know him is to essentialise him or understand his principle and the driving force behind this principle - (Fawehinmiism).
Gani has the unshakable stand that all human beings owe a duty to the society. That all Nigerians have an uncompromising obligations to advance the good cause of their country.
Gani's position is that if poverty engulfs the Nigerian people as it is today, the members of his professional calling - lawyers, must be in the fore front of the crusade for the abolition of poverty. According to him, this can only be done by ensuring that those economic rights of the Nigeria people, which denial is responsible for their poverty, must be made fundamental rights.
Gani's explanation for this need is very logical. In his words:
"You deny the people economic rights,
you enthrone poverty and by that
you misdirect the people."
Gani's passion for the advancement of the Rule of Law is unrivalled. He has consistently called on Legal Practitioners to uncompromisingly protect, defend, advance and observe the rule of law.
